Knowing where you are from helps guide you to where you are going.
The First Baptist Church of St Helens was organized on July 12, 1936
after meeting in a large circus tent on Columbia Blvd under
Missionary Leonard Sigle and our first pastor, J.W. Black.
With the inevitability of winter coming on, that tent just
would not do so the church decided to rent a small stone
building belonging to the old Catholic Church.
Since the first building was located across the street from
the fire station and they had the habit of sounding the siren at noon
every day, including Sundays, the church sought out a different
building to worship in, finally buying a piece of ground to build out
own. Just before Thanksgiving 1938, our building 15th St was complete
and we began worshipping there.
It took 63 years before we bought the property at our current location.
Having a general contractor as a member helped speed construction of
the new building along. What is now our fellowship hall was completed
and we began holding services there on June 3, 2001. With
project "A" finished,, project "B"(the new sanctuary) began in earnest.
It was completed in 2003 and its first function was to host
the funeral service of a former pastor's dear wife, Flo Smith.
Over her years of service, the church has planted new churches in many
places in Oregon like Albany, Corvallis, Longview, Hillsboro, Vancouver
and Yamhill. She has sponsored missions overseas in China and
Ghana.
We look forward to the next 82 years and serving God by serving those
around us and showing them the love that God showed to us.
Romans 5:8
But God commendeth his love toward us,
In that, while we were yet sinners,
Christ died for us.
